This year’s exhibition starts on October 10th. This time, the theme comes from an NHK “Taiga drama” (historical drama TV series) called “Unbound”, which premiered this year.

今年の「二本松の菊人形」は10月10日に開幕します。今年のテーマは「華やぐ江戸文化～蔦屋重三郎の生きた世～」で、NHKで放送されている大河ドラマ『べらぼう〜蔦重栄華乃夢噺〜』から着想を得ています。

Before this year‘s Chrysanthemum Doll Exhibition, we spoke with Mr. Satō of the Secretariat of Nihonmatsu Chrysanthemum Prosperity Association.
“Chrysanthemums are the symbol of the city and come in a variety of styles – both Japanese and Western – and colors, including red, yellow, white, and even the rare green. Our chrysanthemums are grown by the Nihonmatsu Chrysanthemum Prosperity Association, the Chrysanthemum Lovers' Association, and the Chrysanthemum Producers' Association, each using their own unique expertise,”he says. Preparation for the event begins a year in advance. The exhibition theme often features well-known historical dramas, folk tales such as "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," or other historical motifs.

「二本松の菊人形」を前に、二本松菊栄会事務局の佐藤勇紀さんにお話を伺いました。
「菊は市のシンボルで、和菊や洋菊、赤・黄・白など多彩な色があり、珍しい緑の花もあります。栽培は、二本松菊栄会や菊花愛好会、菊生産組合などが独自のノウハウで行っています」と話します。イベントの準備は1年前から始まります。多くの人に知られている大河ドラマや「竹取物語」のような昔話、歴史をテーマにすることが多いとのこと。

The Nihonmatsu Chrysanthemum Doll Exhibition is held annually to preserve the culture of “kiku-ningyō”. Every year the event attracts between 40,000 and 50,000 visitors. “The Chrysanthemum Prosperity Association also holds classes on how to arrange chrysanthemum dolls, working to pass on these techniques. Elementary and junior high school students in the city also grow chrysanthemums, decorate the venue, and adorn the shopping district, contributing to the event’s promotion,” Mr. Satō explains.
Doll preparation begins in July or August. It takes two chrysanthemum craftsmen a full day to dress a single doll. This year, two craftsmen and five assistants are creating 24 dolls.

「二本松の菊人形」は菊人形の文化を守るために毎年開催されていて、毎年4〜5万人もの来場者があります。「菊栄会が菊着け教室を開き技術の継承に取り組んだり、市内の小中学生が菊を栽培し、菊人形会場に飾ったり、また商店街では菊を飾ったりして、市をあげて菊人形のPRをしています」と教えてくれました。
人形自体の準備は7〜8月に始まります。人形を1体作るには菊師2人で作業しても一日がかりです。今年は菊師2人とアシスタント5人で24体を制作するため着々と準備を進めています。

We also spoke with Mr. Honda, a member of the Nihonmatsu Chrysanthemum Prosperity Association. Currently, he grows chrysanthemums with 4 other people at his farm. Mr. Honda himself began growing chrysanthemums for the Exhibition 20 years ago, after responding to the city’s recruitment call. "Chrysanthemums are beautiful, long-lasting flowers with a special elegance," he says with a gentle smile. "Watering and temperature control are very important for cultivation. We grow 14 varieties of chrysanthemums in the open field and “senrinzaki” under the roof. It takes two years to get 1,000 blossoms from a single seedling. This involves constantly adjusting the branches, pinching them back, and managing the hours and amount of sunlight. It's incredibly satisfying when flowers bloom from the place that once had nothing," he shares.

菊栄会職員の本田享一さんにもお話を伺いました。現在は、本田さんを含めて5人で菊の栽培を行っています。本田さん自身は20年前に市の募集で菊づくりを始めました。「菊は美しく長持ちし、特別な品がある花」と優しい笑顔で話します。「露地で14種類の菊を、ハウスで千輪咲を育てています。一本の苗から千輪咲かせるには2年もかかります。栽培は水やりや温度管理が重要で、枝ぶりの手入れ、日照時間の管理にも気を配らないといけません。何もないところから花が咲いたときがとてもうれしい」と答えてくれました。
