Located in western Fukushima Prefecture, Aizu is one of its three regions (the others are Nakadōri in the center and Hamadōri in the east). Its largest city by population, Aizuwakamatsu, is especially known for Tsuruga Castle – once a political and military center, a famous battlefield, and today a symbol of samurai heritage. The city annually hosts Aizu Festival, which originally began as a memorial to those from Aizu who lost their lives in the Boshin War and as an expression of gratitude to ancestors. During the festival, you can dance along with locals and enjoy the mesmerizing lantern procession.

福島県⻄部に位置する会津地⽅は、県内を三つに分ける地域の⼀つです（ほかは、中部の中通りと東部の浜通り）。会津地⽅で⼈⼝が最も多い会津若松市は、かつて会津藩の政治と軍事の中⼼地であり、鶴ヶ城は名城として広く知られています。会津まつりは、戊⾠戦争で命を落とした会津の⼈々を慰霊し、また先祖への感謝を表す⾏事として始まり、毎年会津若松市で開催されます。現在の会津まつりでは、地元の⼈々と⼀緒に会津磐梯⼭踊りを踊ったり、幻想的な提灯⾏列を楽しんだりすることができます。

1. Lantern Procession / 提灯⾏列
The procession traditionally opens the festival. Children from different parts of the city march through the streets with swinging lanterns, starting at the castle.
会津まつりの開催を告げる伝統的な⾏事です。市内各地から集まった⼦どもたちが鶴ヶ城を出発し、提灯を⼿に街を練り歩きます。

Citizens and visitors dance together to Japanese folk songs. Individuals and small groups can participate without reservation. This event is also held on Day 2, following the same schedule at the same place.
市⺠と観光客が⺠謡の歌詞に合わせて輪踊りで⼀緒に踊ります。個⼈または少⼈数グループの場合は予約なしで参加できます。会津磐梯⼭踊りは2⽇⽬も同じスケジュールで開催されます。

1. Ancestors Thanksgiving Ceremony / 先⼈感謝祭
This is a ceremony to honor Aizu's ancestors and pray for the success of the festival.
会津の先⼈を敬い、会津まつりの成功を祈願する神事です。

2. Aizu Domain Lord’s Procession / 会津藩公⾏列
This is the festival’s biggest event. Hundreds of people dressed as warriors parade through the city after the departure ceremony. The footman procession, where men with faces painted red demonstrate their spear-wielding skills, is a must-see.
会津まつりの最も⼤きなイベントです。⼤勢が武者姿に扮し、鶴ヶ城本丸を出発してまちなかを練り歩きます。顔を⾚く隈どった奴隊による⽑槍による所作は必⾒です。

1. Nisshinkan Kids Procession / ⽇新館童⼦⾏列
Sixth graders dress as warriors and march from the city center to Tsuruga Castle’s inner citadel, honoring the children of the Nisshinkan Aizu Domain School. At the return ceremony, Wakamatsu Kindergarten students perform dances.
会津藩校・⽇新館で学んだ⼦どもにちなんで、⼩学校6年⽣が武者姿でまちの中⼼部から鶴ヶ城本丸まで練り歩きます。帰陣式では、若松幼稚園の園児による演舞も予定されています。
