Last time, I introduced some of the most famous "hanami" spots in Fukushima. This time, I’ve picked three places that I’d recommend for visitors who have already been to Fukushima before, or for those who’d like to explore somewhere a bit more off the beaten path. Even though I call them “new hints”, these places are well known and loved by local residents. Still, for travelers coming from other parts of Japan or from overseas, these places might feel like pleasant discoveries.

前回は福島県内の有名な花見スポットを紹介しましたが、今回は、福島を訪れるのが初めてではない方や、穴場のような場所を訪れてみたいという観光客の方におすすめしたいスポットを3つ用意しました。「穴場」といっても、地元の方々には親しまれている花見スポットですが、密かな名所でもあり、県外や海外からの旅行者にとっては穴場と感じられるかもしれません。

Hamadōri region / 浜通り

21st Century Forest Park (Iwaki City)
This is a large park developed for the Fukushima National Sports Festival (1995), which includes full-scale sports facilities, as well as open spaces for events and walking areas that make use of the park’s natural forest. In spring, the park is bright with rapeseed flowers and cherry blossoms, while in autumn it’s filled with cosmos flowers. From around mid-February to mid-March, vivid pink "Kawazu" sakura begin to bloom, and in April the "Somei-Yoshino" cherry trees reach their peak. It’s a great place to enjoy a relaxed walk while taking in the spring blossoms.

21世紀の森公園（いわき市）
いわき市にある21世紀の森公園は、第50回ふくしま国体（1995年）に合わせて整備された公園で、本格的なスポーツ施設があります。イベントが開かれる広場や自然林を生かした散策エリアなどもあり、春は菜の花と桜、秋はコスモスが園内を彩ります。2月中旬～3月中旬ごろは鮮やかなピンク色の河津桜が咲き、4月になるとソメイヨシノが見頃になります。花見に併せて散歩を楽しみたい方におすすめしたい公園です。

Nakadōri region / 中通り

Ōmori Jōyama Park (Fukushima City)
This park was created on the site of the former Ōmori Castle. In spring, about 700 cherry trees bloom here, including "Somei-Yoshino" variety, weeping sakura, and mountain sakura. In early April, a cherry blossom festival is usually held here, and the trees are illuminated at night. One of the park’s distinctive features is that the blossoms tend to reach their peak a little later than in other parts of the city. Once you enter the park, the whole area is wrapped in a soft pink of cherry blossoms, making it the kind of place where you naturally want to stay a while. On weekends the parking can get crowded, so it’s a good idea to park a bit farther away and walk in.

大森城山公園（福島市）
かつての大森城跡を整備して作られた公園です。春になると、ソメイヨシノやシダレ桜、山桜など約700本の桜が咲き誇ります。毎年、4月上旬ごろにはさくらまつりが開かれ、夜にはライトアップも行われます。市内でも見頃が少し遅いのが特徴です。公園に入ると一面が淡い桜色に包まれて、つい長居したくなる場所です。週末は入口にある駐車場が混むので、近隣の駐車所に止めて散策がてら行くのがおすすめです。

Aizu region / 会津

Weeping Cherry Trees (Kitakata City)
The “Nicchū Line Weeping Sakura Line” in Kitakata City is a walking path created along the former site of the Japan National Railways Nicchū Line. For about 3 kilometers, around 1,000 weeping cherry trees (mainly "Yaebeni-shidare" and "Beni-shidare" varieties) line the path. In spring, their branches hang down and bloom from both sides of the walkway. When the trees are in full bloom, it almost feels like walking through a tunnel of cherry blossoms. It’s a lovely place to take a slow stroll and stop for photos along the way.

日中線跡のしだれ桜（喜多方市）
喜多方市にある「日中線しだれ桜並木」は、旧国鉄日中線の跡地を整備して造られた遊歩道です。約3kmにわたり、約1,000本のしだれ桜（八重紅しだれ、紅しだれ）が並び、春になると道の両側から枝が垂れ下がるように咲き誇ります。満開の時期には、まるで桜のトンネルの中を歩いているような景色が広がり、ゆっくり散策しながら写真を撮るのにもおすすめの場所です。
