This is the third chapter of the “Exploring Roadside Stations” series. Having previously shared some of my favorite spots in Nakadōri and Aizu regions, this time I headed to Hamadōri to visit the Roadside Station “Namie” in Namie Town. The spacious grounds are located right along the Ukedo River, with the Pacific Ocean also close by. I often stop here while driving to rest or shop, so I feel particularly familiar with the place and would like to share its charm with you.
History of “Namie” /
Roadside Station “Namie” celebrated its grand opening on March 20, 2021. To learn more about its story and unique features, I spoke with Mr. Yamazaki, who handles planning and PR at this facility.
In 2011, the complex disaster of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident forced all residents of Namie Town to evacuate, temporarily bringing the population down to zero. Although evacuation orders were partially lifted in 2017, housing and work circumstances prevented many from returning right away. Even so, people continued to visit Namie to pay their respects at family graves or meet people they knew. Yet there was no place where people could meet up, sit down, and take their time talking with one another.
In response, the town held discussions with residents about what kind of place they wanted. “Namie” was born from these voices: a dining area, community lounges, and a place to purchase flowers for those visiting family graves. A convenience store was originally planned, but when several opened nearby, the Station instead welcomed a “MUJI” store offering everyday essentials. Thus, Roadside Station "Namie" was designed not only as a rest stop and information center, but also as a place where local residents can gather and spend time together.
Mr. Yamazaki isn't originally from Namie; he previously worked for a printing company. However, while living in Fukushima, he felt that he was not doing enough to contribute to the region's recovery. Through a connection that brought him to Namie, he decided to put his PR and communications experience from magazine production to use. He now works in planning and public relations at the facility.
Facility Theme /
Roadside Station “Namie” is guided by the philosophy of “gathering people, things (products), and experiences”. “People” here are returning residents, newcomers starting new businesses or farms, and visiting tourists. “Things” refers to new products and local resources and features that have emerged since the disaster. “Experiences” are events and activities that give people a reason to come together.
A standout example of a new “product” is “Hama no Kagayaki”, a locally branded onion. Namie Town is expected to become an important onion-producing area, helping to fill the gap between the shipping seasons of major producing regions such as Hokkaido, Hyōgo, and Saga prefectures. Beyond cultivating onions, the town focuses on product development, and the Station's shelves are filled with popular goods made from “Hama no Kagayaki”.
On the “experiences” side, the station hosts seasonal harvest festivals, craft markets, and hands-on workshops ranging from custom nail art to baby handprint crafts. Other standout events include “Fukushimuscle” — a muscle event featuring unique challenges like rice-bag carrying that draws participants nationwide. Another highlight is an event in which participants attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest “Namie Yakisoba” (stir-fried noodles) tasting meet. The community lounge also serves local needs by hosting town meetings and exercise classes for seniors.
Highlights /
Inside the Station's shop, shelves are packed with local produce, goods, and sake unique to Namie. The “koppepan” soft bread roll from bakery “Honoka” is particularly popular and had already sold out when I visited in the early afternoon. A pre-construction resident survey included requests such as “Flavors we remember from before the disaster” and “Freshly baked bread”. The shop then recreated recipes from a local bakery of the time, and adds fillings after each order. Its popular “Michi no Eki Namie Yakisoba Bread Roll” is quite substantial, so a mini version was later created for those wishing to enjoy it alongside other flavors. The facility's culinary workshop studio also hosts cooking classes and product development using regional ingredients. One example is a rice burger created by students at Namie Sōsei Junior High School, which was developed here and brought to market. During the presentation, the students themselves promoted and sold it at the counter. For dining, “Foodterrace Kanade” and “Mendokoro Hirota Seifunjo” serve “Namie Yakisoba”, whitebait donburi, and ramen, while “Sabō Yui” offers a variety of beverages.
Adjacent to the main building, the “Namie no Waza / Nariwai-kan” annex houses an “Ōbori Sōma” pottery shop, and the dessert shop “SakeKura Yui” where you will also find sake from “Suzuki Shuzōten” brewery. The pottery section features handcrafted pieces of famous “Ōbori Sōma” style from various local kilns, ranging from traditional designs to rare, unique styles.“Suzuki Shuzōten”, known for its signature sake “Iwaki Kotobuki”, was originally Japan's closest brewery to the ocean before its facilities near Ukedo Port were washed away by the tsunami. After temporarily resuming production in Yamagata Prefecture, the brewery built a new facility alongside the Station and officially returned brewing to its hometown in 2021. Visitors can watch the brewing process through viewing glass when timing allows. At “SakeKura Yui”, you can purchase local sake or enjoy sweets made with “Suzuki Shuzōten's” sweet amazake.
When asked for the top food recommendation, Mr. Yamazaki pointed straight to “Namie Yakisoba”. Born about 50 years ago as a quick, filling meal for foresters, fishermen, and construction workers, it features extra-thick noodles (roughly three times the size of standard ramen noodles) stir-fried in lard with pork and bean sprouts. Its generous portion and satisfying texture have made it a popular local favorite. Goods featuring the Namie Town brand onion “Hama no Kagayaki” are also attracting attention. The souvenir shop carries a wide variety of them, including onion soups, dressings, curries, and even traditional Japanese sweets.
Roadside Station “Namie” is also known for “Chansey Park” (Lucky Park), featuring Chansey, the Pokémon that supports Fukushima and is said to bring happiness, along with Lickitung, Pikachu, and other Pokémon incorporated into the playground equipment. According to Mr. Yamazaki, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms along the Ukedo River in spring, fields blanketed in sunflowers in summer, cosmos, the town flower, in autumn, and graceful swans in winter.
Asked about the true appeal of “Namie”, Mr. Yamazaki pointed to the vitality of its returning residents: “Everyone is so lively, full of ideas, and taking on new challenges. I want as many people as possible to see what our local community is doing. Some people might still think Namie Town is inaccessible, but residents are back and launching new initiatives. I believe that creating opportunities through events for people to see the Namie of today and experience its vitality is an important part of our role”. His words conveyed the passion of the people in Namie who are taking on new challenges.
Nearby spots worth visiting include Ukedo Elementary School (preserved to convey memories of the disaster), The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum, and the Fukushima March 11 Memorial Park. Ukedo Beach, which reopened for swimming this year for the first time in 16 years, is another place to experience the Namie Town of today firsthand. When visiting Hamadōri, consider exploring the ever-changing town of Namie and stopping by Roadside Station “Namie”.
