Recently, I introduced some of both major and off-the-beaten-path places to enjoy cherry blossoms in Fukushima Prefecture. Sakura is known for its beautiful but brief blooming period. “Hanami” sites in central and coastal Fukushima are usually recommended for visiting in early April. However, there are still many places where you can enjoy cherry blossoms from now on (especially in the Aizu region, where the higher elevation and landscape result in a later blooming season).

先日、福島県で花見を楽しめる定番の観光地や隠れた名所を数カ所ご紹介しました。桜はとても美しい一方で、一斉に満開を迎え、見頃はわずか10日程度です。中通り地方や浜通り地方では例年4月上旬の訪問がおすすめとされています。しかし、これからでも花見を楽しめるスポットはまだたくさんあります（特に、標高が高く、地形の影響を受ける会津地方では開花時期が遅くなる傾向があります）。

Ishibe-zakura / 石部桜

This is one of the Aizu region’s most iconic solitary cherry trees — an “Edo-higan” sakura estimated to be around 650 years old. It is said to have once stood in the garden of samurai Ishibe Jibu Dayū of the Ashina clan, which ruled Aizu during the medieval period. Surrounded by open farmland, it is particularly striking when in full bloom. With its ten trunks and branches spreading to roughly 20 meters, it presents a truly majestic sight.

会津を代表する一本桜で、樹齢約650年のエドヒガンです。中世の会津を治めた葦名氏の重臣 石部治部大輔の庭にあったと伝えられています。周囲が開けた耕地に囲まれており、満開時の景観が特に美しいです。10本の幹と約20mに広がる枝ぶりが特徴で、堂々とした姿を見せます。

Natsui Senbon-zakura / 夏井千本桜

Around 1,000 “Somei-Yoshino” cherry trees line a five-kilometer stretch along both banks of the Natsui River. The river rises in the Abukuma Mountains and flows for 67 kilometres before reaching the Pacific Ocean. The trees were planted in 1975 as part of local land improvement and river restoration efforts. You can enjoy the sakura avenue from the riverside walking paths, while the view from the Ban-etsu Expressway offers a sweeping perspective of the entire scene.

夏井川両岸約5kmにわたり、ソメイヨシノ約1,000本が植樹されています。夏井川は阿武隈山地を源に太平洋へ注ぐ全長67kmの河川で、土地改良や河川改修を契機として、1975年に桜の植樹が行われました。遊歩道から桜並木を眺めるのはもちろん、磐越自動車道から一望できる景観も特徴です。

Sakura Tōge / 桜峠

Located in Urabandai, Sakura Tōge (“sakura pass”) is a scenic spot known for around 3,000 “Ōyama-zakura” cherry trees, which usually reach their peak around Golden Week (a spring holiday period in Japan). The vivid pink blossoms, set against mountains still dusted with lingering snow, create a beautiful landscape. The number of trees increased after a commemorative planting in 2001, giving the area its current scale. Visitors can stroll through the blossoms and enjoy wide views of flowers spreading across the entire pass.

裏磐梯にある桜峠は、約3,000本のオオヤマザクラが咲く名所で、見頃はゴールデンウィーク前後です。濃いピンクの桜と残雪を抱く山の景観がとても魅力的です。2001年の記念植樹をきっかけに本数が増え、現在の規模になりました。桜の中を歩きながら峠一面に広がる花景色を楽しめます。

Kannonji River Sakura Avenue / 観音寺川の桜並木

Stretching for about one kilometer along the Kannonji River, this path is known for its tunnel of around 200 cherry trees, including “Somei-Yoshino” and weeping sakura varieties. The trees were planted in the early Shōwa period (1926–1989), and the site has been designated as the 11th stop on the Tōhoku tourism route (“Tōhoku Yume no Sakura Kaidō”) that connects notable sakura spots across the region. During the cherry blossom festival, food stalls line the area, and the trees are illuminated at night, allowing you to enjoy the blossoms glowing in a range of colours.

観音寺川沿いに約1kmにわたって続く桜並木で、ソメイヨシノやシダレザクラ約200本が桜のトンネルをつくる名所です。昭和初期に植樹され、東北夢の桜街道第11番札所にも選ばれています。桜まつり期間中は屋台が出店し、夜にはライトアップが行われるので七色に照らされた夜桜も楽しめます。
