Little things /

Having spent quite a few years living in Fukushima Prefecture now, I've realized that a lot of my initial impressions and vivid first reactions when I first arrived as an exchange student have started to fade, and everyday life is rather predictable. But at the same time, thinking back on this brings specific memories that to me were unique Fukushima moments or realizations. They might not seem like a big deal, and still, I'm curious to know: are these just typical experiences you'd have anywhere in Japan, or is there something special about Fukushima that makes them unique?
When I first arrived here, I was a 19-year-old university student who couldn't drive yet, so going on road trips with my Japanese friends felt like an adventure. The beautiful scenery around us was always enjoyable, but during one drive, traveling from Nakadōri to either Aizu or Hamadōri, I discovered what felt like “magic corridors”. Fukushima's three main regions are separated by mountain ranges. Coming from a country with practically no mountains, I had no idea just how much mountains could affect the weather. I was totally mesmerized by how passing through one tunnel and emerging on the other side could instantly transform everything around: the weather, the temperature, even the smell of the air. These days, whenever I drive through one of those mountain tunnels between the regions, I just anticipate what is going to be on the other side. It can shift slightly or flip completely, which is still entertaining.
Another thing is Fukushima's sheer size — it's actually the third-largest prefecture in Japan. What feels like a regular drive between towns for a scenic view to me now might be equivalent to crossing an entire prefecture somewhere else. Living here definitely changes your perception of time and distance.
And every day I feel that agriculture is also deeply woven into everyday life here. Even if you live in one of the bigger cities, you're never far from orchards or rice paddies. Sure, the downtown city centers look like any other urban area, but walk for a bit and you will probably see a field or agricultural facilities out of nowhere. I still remember how excited I was the first time I got to ride a rice-planting machine, mainly because my home country doesn't grow rice. These days, I spend some time at the garden, sometimes drive small tractors (not that I'm any good at it), and receive fresh produce from my neighbors, all of which has simply become my "new normal".
It makes me wonder what other quiet marvels we overlook as ordinary, simply because we have grown used to them. I think noting these details is a good way to pause, observe the world around us, and truly appreciate the gentle charm of daily life. Why don't you try capturing your daily memories as well? I think I'll keep writing mine down as they come back to me.
