The “Gion Matsuri” originated in Kyōto as a Shintō ritual to ward off epidemics and eventually spread across the country. The roots of the “Aizu Tajima Gion Matsuri” stretch back to the Kamakura period (end of 12th century–1333), boasting a history of over 800 years. It began when the local lord of the time adopted Kyoto's “Gion” faith and enshrined its deity in the area. Over time, it merged with the rituals of the local “Tadeuga Shrine” to evolve into the festival we see today. The community's deep-seated prayers for peace and protection against disease are still carefully preserved. Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, this is the defining summer event of Minamiaizu Town.

京都発祥の祇園祭は疫病退散を願う神道の祭礼で、全国へと広がりました。「会津田島祇園祭」の起源は鎌倉時代にさかのぼり、800年以上の歴史を誇ります。当時、この地域の領主が京都の祇園信仰を取り入れ、神様を迎えたことが始まりとされています。その後、地元の田出宇賀（たでうが）神社の祭礼と結びつき、現在の形へと発展しました。疫病退散や地域の平和を願う人々の信仰が今も大切に受け継がれています。日本の重要無形民俗文化財でもあり、南会津町の夏を代表する祭りです。

The festival is supported by a unique organizational structure known as the “Otōya” system. Every year, a group of local residents forms the "Otōya-gumi” team to handle the entire operation. Their duties extend far beyond the main three-day event in July; they spend a full year preparing, starting with sacred rituals right at the beginning of January. This community-driven structure, where the entire town comes together to protect and pass down their deep heritage, is highly respected across the country.

この祭りを支えているのは独自の「御党屋(おとうや)」制度です。地域住民で構成される「御党屋組」が毎年の運営を担っており、7月の本番だけでなく、年初の神事を含め１年をかけて準備を進めています。地域全体が一体となり、長い歴史を守り伝える住民の運営体制も一目置かれています。

The festival takes place centered around “Tadeuga Shrine” and the neighboring “Kumano Shrine”. Throughout the event, the lively sounds of “matsuri-bayashi” (festival music played to accompany portable shrines and processions) echo through the streets, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the retro atmosphere of the historic townscape.

On the first day, the Annual Grand Festival starts with the performance of the sacred “Urayasu-mai” dance, alongside the parading of large festival floats and theatrical Kabuki performances. The festival reaches its climax on the second day with the “Nanahokai Procession”. In this event, unmarried local women dressed in vibrant bridal “furisode” kimonos (formal attire with long flowing sleeves) march through the town — a stunning sight often called the most beautiful bridal procession in Japan that never fails to captivate the festival visitors. The morning also features the carrying of portable shrines and powerful drum performances, while the evening sees the grand festival floats parading once again alongside more Kabuki plays. On the final day, the traditional ritual performance "Daidai O-kagura" (sacred music and dance offered to the deities as a prayer and for banishing of evil spirits) brings the three-day festival to a majestic close.

祭りは田出宇賀神社と隣の熊野神社を中心に開催されます。期間中は町中に祭り囃子が響き渡り、歴史ある街並みと祭りの独特の雰囲気を満喫できます。初日の22日は例大祭斎行、浦安舞（うらやすまい）奉奏、屋台の運行と歌舞伎の上演が行われます。23日の「七行器(ななほかい)行列」で祭りの盛り上がりはピークを迎えます。鮮やかな振袖を着た未婚の女性たちが街を練り歩く姿は日本一の花嫁行列とも呼ばれており、来場者を魅了します。また、午前中には神輿渡御と太鼓演奏を楽しめ、夕方には大屋台が巡行し、歌舞伎も上演されます。最終日の24日には太々御神楽が奉納され、3日間にわたる祭りは幕を閉じます。
